The Gurmukhi alphabet

35 letters. One sound each.
No exceptions.

Unlike English, Punjabi has zero exceptions — every letter makes exactly one sound. Your child can decode any Punjabi word within weeks of learning this.

Why this matters: Once your child knows these 35 letters, they can read any Punjabi word — road signs in Punjab, grandparent's texts, storybooks — without being told the word first.

ਅ — "aa" (like "up")

The foundational vowel. Makes the short "uh" sound — like the beginning of "umbrella." Every Punjabi word is built from sounds like this.

🧠 Person sitting cross-legged — "uh, I'm resting!"

ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ?
How are you?
ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ
I am very fine
ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਜੀ!
Thank you!
Tip: Clap on every syllable. Kids age 4–6 will have this memorised in 3 days.

My family song
